The Veterans Opportunity to Work to Hire Heroes Act was enacted by President Obama in 2011 and the Transition Goals, Plans, Success (Transition GPS) was developed to assist Servicemembers by giving them vital information, guidance and preparation to easily transition into civilian life. The goal of the program is to identify military member needs in order to better assist them with their transition into the civilian community. Services are then provided, either directly or in combination with referrals, to other appropriate agencies. The Transition GPS program is mandatory for all members before leaving the military. It is a five day program that is held twice a month. The first day of briefs includes an explanation of the entire program. The program includes briefings on financial readiness, Department of Labor, Veterans Affairs, and Disabled Transition Assistance Program.
MANDATORY PRE-SEPARATION COUNSELING. Everyone separating or retiring from the military MUST receive a congressionally mandated pre-separation counseling briefing which covers the services and benefits available to them. Before a Servicemember can sign up for Transition GPS, the member must have attend the preseparation counseling. Upon completion of the briefing, a DD Form 2648 (Pre-Separation Counseling Checklist) is completed by the member and signed by both the member and the Transition staff member who provided the counseling; this becomes a permanent part of the member’s personnel file.
The Transition GPS workshop is held in the new Air Force Transition Assistance Center on JBER (previously known as the Arctic Warrior Orientation Center). To register for Tranisition GPS members must call 552-6619 or 552-4943.
Air Force Wounded Warrior (AFW2)
The Air Force is committed to providing the highest level of support to our combat-related wounded, ill and injured Airmen and their families. Providing our wounded Airmen and their families the best possible services and resources will help secure a successful transition back to duty or to civilian life. Not only does this include first-class non medical care and support, it includes a refined transition back to duty or to civilian life. The MFSC is an integral part of the process for assisting our AFW2. The MFSC (or Airmen & Family Readiness Center) ensures our wounded warriors receive face-to-face, personalized services, we provide professional enhanced services such as transition assistance, employment assistance, moving assistance, financial counseling, information and referral, and emergency financial assistance, if needed.
